KubeCon + CloudNativeCon 2021 is back! The Cloud Native Computer Foundation’s flagship conference is right around the corner on October 13-15 in Los Angeles, CA.
Here at Fairwinds, we are getting excited to discuss all things Kubernetes with other adopters and technologists from the open source and cloud native communities. The hybrid in-person/virtual event promises to provide an educational four days of keynote sessions, tracks and presentations covering the value of Kubernetes and other cloud native technologies.
As we know, these technologies facilitate faster software development at a lower operational cost than traditional infrastructure. But the Cloud Native world is full of new and uncharted territory, and businesses are still learning how to adapt their policies and practices for the new era of computing. KubeCon + CloudNativeCon will help provide attendees with a map through this emerging terrain, bringing a community of practitioners and experts together to share their experience expertise on this increasingly prominent digital territory.
So, what are the four important topics you can expect to hear about in the Kubernetes world?
Larger organizations tend to adopt Kubernetes in a piecemeal way, with individual teams deciding how and when to make the switch. Organizations are beginning to realize they have a large fleet of Kubernetes clusters running in their cloud, with very little consistency, policy, and tooling in place to govern them. The result is a chaotic environment of cluster and workload sprawl, creating redundant efforts and wasted resources, a myriad of governance challenges, and a software environment that is difficult (if not impossible) to properly secure.
At Kubecon this year, we expect to see solutions that help give larger organizations unified management and visibility for their fleet of Kubernetes clusters.
Did you know cluster sprawl negatively impacts the governance, development and operations? You can easily find out more about creating a governance framework that works for your organization.
While Kubernetes can provide a solid platform foundation, it can also be overwhelming to master, especially for development teams. While your SRE and operations teams do need deep understanding of Kubernetes, other teams, like web and application developers, likely don’t need to learn everything to be productive.
With the right abstractions (removing details to reveal necessary functionality), developers can interact with a Kubernetes platform more easily, leading to less effort and faster innovation. While we’ve seen a few Kubernetes development and deployment platforms surface already, none has found the sweet spot in the tradeoff between complexity and flexibility - we expect to see some evolution in this space at Kubecon this year.
Kubernetes is now a high-value target for cybercriminals looking to access sensitive user data and intellectual property. Fortunately, as the attackers have gotten more sophisticated, so have the tools for defending your environment.
At Kubecon, we expect to see a proliferation of platforms for identifying and mitigating the potential risks in your cluster, as well as plenty of advice for how you can better secure sensitive workloads. The best solutions will provide actionable recommendations on how to secure your Kubernetes clusters through smarter access control on the network and application layer, as well as enforcing policy and workload isolation. Continuous Kubernetes security monitoring of your clusters reduces risks and ensures best practices are followed.
As the number of Kubernetes clusters grows within an organization, so does the need for formal policies. These policies can keep environments secure, consistent, and compliant with both internal and third-party requirements. There are an increasing number of platforms which can help you both define and automatically enforce Kubernetes policies—keep an eye out for more innovation and growth in this area.
Whether you are joining in person or virtually, don't miss out on how Fairwinds can help you achieve Kubernetes governance, security and cost optimization.
